While traveling in Paris last spring, I stumbled upon the beautiful Sonia Rykiel shop…. filled with rhinestone encrusted sunglasses, heart shaped hair clips, and bulky graphic knits. I felt a little rag tag amidst the overwhelming french sophistication- like a dirty hippie who obviously didn’t belong. Now back in the safe haven of beach bum Venice, I am dreaming of french elegance- they are so serious about being outrageous! Rykiel has always been one of my creative heroes, flowery and feminine with a lot of humor. There is something unapologetic and fiercely confident about her ability to be sophisticated while tongue in cheek- sometimes her choices are funny- but never goofy- always sexy. A new show on the Sundance channel called The Day Before documents the 40th anniversary of Rykiel’s brand- now managed in large part by her daughter. So moving to watch the creative process and family dynamic between these two lovely ladies. As a surprise gift, Rykiel’s daughter had tons of amazing designers make garments inspired by Rykiel… sitting in the audience, the influential designer watched as her peers paid tribute to her- it was a true act of love…. my favorite is the knit dress above- by Jean Paul Gaulteir. After the show Gaultier told Rykiel that he “owed so much to Rykiel”. She told him she was waiting for a check. So cute.

Ps. I don’t want to know a world without pearls and rhinestones…..

Speaking the Fabulous French…. I have to take a moment to pay tribute to the enigmatic Jane Birkin. Why does she even bother wearing clothes. Ever. What an incredible woman- and her style….. what can I say that hasn’t been said a thousand times before.

Yay Jane, Yay Serge
